1815 (1819-1885) Captain Charles Stewart Naval Medal. Original Dies. Bronze. 65 mm. By Moritz Furst. Julian NA-22. MS-64 BN (NGC).,Struck from the original dies, the base of the letter T in FURST defective with a "bar" (per Julian) across it that suggests repunching. This is a beautiful Choice example with rich olive-brown and autumn orange patina to both sides. Otherwise satiny in texture, modest hints of reflectivity in the fields are evident as the medal dips into a light. Sharply struck with just a few faint carbon spots precluding an even higher numeric grade.
The reverse design depicts the naval engagement between the USS Constitution and the British warships Cyane and Levant fought on February 20, 1815, which actually took place after the Treaty of Ghent official ended the War of 1812. The dies were prepared by Moritz Furst in 1819. Copy dies were made sometime after 1885 since the specimen in the collection at West Point produced around that time also displays the aforementioned defective T in FURST.,,
