Kansas--Leavenworth. 1863 Adolph Cohen. Fuld-550A-1b. Rarity-8. Brass. 19 mm. MS-61 (NGC).,Pale silver gray patina to overall brassy-gold surfaces, a few swirls of deeper charcoal-lilac are evident in the right reverse field. Sharply struck with no significant handling marks, although scattered carbon flecks account for the MS-61 grade from NGC. Adolf Cohen is not only the sole issuer of Civil War store cards from Leavenworth, Kansas, but also in the entire state. He was a dealer in clothing and mens furnishing goods whose business was located at 21 Delaware Street in 1863. Only one pair of dies is known for this merchant with examples struck in copper and brass; examples in the latter composition are rarer in numismatic circles. This is clearly one of the finest survivors of the type that belongs in another renowned collection.<p>During the Civil War era Leavenworth was an important depot for supplies and a point of departure for travelers heading west.,Ex Eric P.
