1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 14-J, W-6395. Rarity-7-. Period after MASSACHUSETTS, Stout Indian. VF-30.,178.3 grains. Choice, light golden brown fields show trouble-free circulation, the legends and devices worn to a darker olive-brown. A trio of hair thin scratches are roughly parallel with Indians bow, and a few minuscule as-struck planchet dips around MO of COMMONWEALTH are far less severe than the sometimes severely flawed surfaces seen on this die marriage. Struck on an unusually hefty flan, with beveled edges that run the rims into the tops of the legends. The elevated weight is doubly unusual in that this die marriage is considered to be a contemporary counterfeit made at Machins Mills, better-known for its lightweight imitations of state and other coppers. Though documented by Ryder a century ago, very few of this die marriage have come to light, leaving it a solid Rarity-7- with 8 specimens known by Massachusetts copper maven Mike Packard. We sold Ryders two specimens in Part 5 of the Ford collection nearly 14 years ago—a "Choice VF" at $57,500 and a "Near Fine" at$32,200. The Partrick specimen sold in 2015 was graded MS-62 by NGC, sold for$64,625, seemingly inexpensively in relation to the earlier price records. The Demling specimen is about as sharp as the Ryder-Boyd-Ford "Choice VF", but without its peripheral planchet irregularities. Here is a coin that has passed from one advanced collection(Syd Martins) to another (Mike Demlings), and its new cabinet of residence will undoubtedly be marked by other Massachusetts copper delicacies as this.,From the Michael Demling Collection of Massachusetts Cents.
