1839 Modified Matron Head Cent. N-9. Rarity-2. Silly Head. MS-65 BN (PCGS).,A handsome and dramatic example of the Newcomb-9 dies with the diagnostic crack now fully formed and bisecting the obverse across Libertys portrait. Flowlines are prominent and the denticles are nearly fully obscured on the reverse, though the central devices retain considerable definition and the stars show sharp centrils. Tinges of violet and crimson are interspersed within the steely brown patina to deliver a lovely complexion that complements the overall untroubled surfaces. A small carbon spot above the N in ONE will be helpful in tracing this satiny Gem through future cabinets. Just 11 examples across all Silly Head varieties have been certified finer by PCGS in this color category, stressing the desirability of the present piece.,Ex Heritages sale of August 2001, lot 5229; Heritages sale of February 2003; lot 5133; Heritages sale of January 2004, lot 4173; Robert Kellert.,
