1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-114, T-16. Rarity-5. Pointed 6, Stem Through Claw. AU Details--Improperly Cleaned (NGC).，A charming example of this rare variety showing Condition Census sharpness. The golden bronze patina is accented by splashes of indigo toning on the reverse. The strike is slightly off-center to the upper obverse and is overall bold for the variety. Though smooth and slightly glossy in texture, the surfaces are free from distracting hairlines or other notable artifacts of the noted cleaning. <p>This specimen is remarkably absent the dramatic crack that is usually seen at the E of AMERICA on the reverse. Researcher Steve Tompkins notes that this "bisecting crack occurred very early in the striking of this die marriage" and examples in this early uncracked state are "extremely rare." Two Mint State examples of the O-114 are known, followed by a few examples at the mid-AU level. The present piece aligns nicely with the lower end of this roster and represents an important offering for specialists.，From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties.
