1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-117, T-30. Rarity-5-. Pointed 6, Stem Through Claw. VF Details--Improperly Cleaned (NGC).,A deep patina of steel blue and golden brown shades paint each side of this rare Pointed 6 example. Magnified inspection reveals a pimply texture at the rims on each side, though the surfaces are free from distracting hairlines or brightness. The weakness on the left side of Liberty is seen on the majority of specimens, and the reverse remains remarkably well-rendered. This is the fourth and final use of this obverse die and it exhibits considerable fatigue from this extended use. It has now been lapped, removing the repunching at TY and much of Libertys lower curls. The cracks in the left peripheries are still bold, showing chips out of the date. The finest example of this variety is an EF-45 (NGC), though this piece is certainly within the top 8-10 known.,From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties. Acquired privately from Don Apte in the 1980s.,
