1878 Morgan Silver Dollar. 7 Tailfeathers. Reverse of 1878. MS-66 (PCGS).，A lovely Gem that offers remarkably smooth surfaces in a survivor of this first year Morgan dollar hub variety. Both sides are brilliant apart from the lightest silver tinting that allows ready appreciation of a bright semi-prooflike finish. The fields are appreciably reflective, although the devices are set apart with a satiny texture that provides a lovely cameo effect as the surfaces rotate under a light. Sharply to fully struck throughout with eye appeal to spare. This is the final reverse hub variety of the 1878 Morgan dollar, the 7 Tailfeathers actually coming in two distinct variants. The Reverse of 1878, offered here, is identifiable by a flat breast on the eagle and parallel top arrow feather. Since the Philadelphia Mint did not record individual mintages for the various circulation strike varieties of the year, we do not know exactly how many examples of the 1878 7 Tailfeathers, Reverse of 1878 were produced. Estimates from numismatic scholars range from a high of 7.2 million pieces (per Q. David Bowers, 2006) to a low of 4.9 million coins (per Walter Breen, 1988). What is known for certain is that this variety, while readily obtainable in lower Mint State grades, develops into a significant condition rarity at and above the MS-66 level.
