Untoned with brilliant silver white surfaces, this boldly struck and carefully preserved Gem is sure to catch the eye of discerning bidders. The mintage of this issue, although often given as 1,100 coins, may actually be closer to 650 pieces. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but what we can say for certain is that, although not a major rarity in an absolute sense, the Proof 1879 Morgan dollar is seldom offered in Proof-65 and higher grades.
