The Philadelphia Mint produced 8,693,556 circulation strike Morgan dollars in 1891, the bullion obtained through provision of the Act of February 28, 1878, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of July 14, 1890 and the Trade Dollar Recoinage Act of March 3, 1891. Although many examples of this issue were likely melted in 1918, at least a million pieces entered numismatic circles in the late 1950s and early 1960s from storage in the Treasury Department building.
