1863 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-58 (PCGS).,With ample satin luster, bold to sharp striking detail and handsome honey-rose patina, this is an exceptionally attractive example of an issue that is elusive even in lower grades. The Philadelphia Mint produced only 5,000 circulation strike three-dollar gold pieces in 1863, a year that saw the tide of the Civil War swing decisively in favor of Union forces. As with all Philadelphia Mint gold issues of the 1861 to 1865 era, the 1863 three did not see commercial use at the time of striking.
