T-2. Confederate Currency. 1861 $500. PMG Very Fine 20 Net. Restoration, Rust.,No. 285, Plate A. Perhaps the most beautifully designed note in all of Confederate currency. The T-2 $500 features a wonderful vignette of a steam locomotive crossing a bridge with cars in tow. Cattle are watering in the stream below. The vignette is flanked on either side by the elaborate green tints with micro die counters that the Montgomery series is known for. A large D counter is seen at top left with small 500 die counters encircling it. A large 500 is seen at top right with the same small 500 die counters. At bottom left is Ceres, Goddess of Agriculture. Just 607 of these National Bank Note Company produced notes were issued and currently around 140 are known. The presently offered note is a new addition to the census having been recently discovered in family holdings in the Deep South. This mid-grade example displays bold green tints and sharply detailed vignettes. The paper is free of cancellation though the grading service has made mention of restoration, which appears reserved to the edges, and rust seen toward the bottom of the note. The penned signatures of Alex B. Clitherall and E.C. Elmore remain bold on this desirable Montgomery note.,,
