NEARLY AS MADE.JAPAN. Bronze Portrait Plaque, ca. 1900.142 x 178 mm. Portrait of a Japanese Admiral, probably Togo Heihachiro, a veteran of the Sino-French and Sino-Japanese Wars and mastermind of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 and 1905. The metal frame, finished in black, has an oval cut-out for the portrait which shows the Admiral facing left in full dress uniform with awards. The plaque is gilt, as are the beveled edges of the portrait recess and an embossed chrysanthemum above the image. The reverse of the frame, which includes an integral white metal stand, has seven vertical lines of inscription in gilt lettering. The entire frame is housed in a hinged, black fabric covered fitted case. A very handsome piece, certainly worthy of further study, and no doubt quite RARE.
